Journey Toward Justice
South Dakota is home to nine tribal nations of Lakota, Dakota and Nakota people. The legacy of Native/White relations in our state includes atrocities such as the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890.
At All Souls, we acknowledge that tribal people in our state have been subjected to racism and discrimination for generations, and continue to be targets of oppression by the dominant culture.
All Souls’ Journey Toward Justice campaign began in 2013 with an effort to repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery. The Journey Toward Justice events take place on and around Native American Day, which in South Dakota has replaced Columbus Day.
Journey Toward Justice was featured in the UU World’s Fall 2013 issue.
Each year, All Souls sponsors Journey Toward Justice events and in some years collaborates with other organizations. Check back in September to see what we’re planning for this year.
