18 Years Behind Bars: A Prison Volunteer’s Story with Mary Montoya

Mary Montoya, great-grandmother and retired CPA, spends about 40 hours a week volunteering in the chapel at the SD State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls primarily for the Native American inmates. She just passed her 18th anniversary of doing this. Mary had the pleasure of working alongside Mark Sanderson for many years.

Mary moved to Sioux Falls as a child on July 4, 1950, attended Washington High, received her BS degree from Creighton University in 1962 and her MBA from USD in 1988. She is married to Leonard Johnson and has two adult children and two adult step-children, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary is a member of St. Mary’s Parish and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and is also a Benedictine Oblate. She received the first Humanitarian Award from the Sioux Falls Human Relations Commission in

2007 for her volunteer work.
