The song lyrics tell us that learning love is as easy as ABC, 1-2-3, Do Re Me. Our UU principles are all about various expressions of love. And what about our First Principle ? Is this where theology starts, with the “inherent worth and dignity of every person?” Rev. …

President's Message

2018 Mid-Year Meeting Highlights

The mid-year meeting was held Sunday, January 28, following the church service.  For those members and friends who were unable to attend, here are the highlights:

• Our office administrator, Jen Stone, was officially introduced, although she is not exactly new. However, some of you have not yet had the opportunity to work with her or meet her.

• An updated members and friends directory was made available and can be picked up at the information table as you enter the church.

• In his report on the All Souls Endowment Fund, Eric Berg pointed out that the funds are managed in “a manner consistent with UU values,” and that the UUA is committed to socially responsible investments. Currently the Endowment Fund has a balance of $22,159.59.

• President-elect Linda Hallstrom updated everyone on the work of the Ministerial Task Force. Our application for a half-time minister has just been posted and the task force is hoping to have some serious nibbles by April or May.

• The Safe Congregations Team was introduced. Members include: Shelby Wentworth, JoAnn Huber, Mike Huber and Janelle Lenser. When the team has its next meeting, a Safety Site Training will be scheduled with police officers who will meet with church leaders to discuss how to keep our building safe and what we are already doing to keep people safe when the church is in use.

• A Behavior Covenant which was recommended by the board, and has been printed in our updated members and friends directory, was adopted with the addition of two amendments.

• The Capital Improvement Plan, reviewed by Joy Hembel and Susan Randall, outlined repairs and improvements to be made on the rental house and church building and grounds between 2017 and 2022. These include such things as: replacement or repair of the parking lot; installation of eight energy-efficient windows throughout the church; fencing an outdoor area where children can play safely; remodeling the lower level bathroom; and replacing damaged or unsafe electrical fixtures and upgrading lighting to LEDs. Some of the funding for these improvement projects would come from a Holiday Appeal, Capital Campaign and the Eliza Tupper Wilkes Building Fund.

Bits 'n' Pieces

Thank you, Members and Friends!

The Banquet and the Bishop Dudley House each received $840 in January from All Souls Church. This generosity was made possible by member and friend gifts to President Janelle Lenser’s annual Holiday Appeal letter as well as through gifts deposited in the Sunday collection plate. These two organizations help carry out our mission honoring the worth and dignity of every person by providing nutritious meals and safe shelter for people in need in the Sioux Falls community.

All Souls Church has also made several other gifts of support this year.

• The Lakota-Dakota-Nakota Spiritual Group at the
SD State Penitentiary, Jameson Annex            $100

• Crisis Relief Fund of the UUA
(for hurricane and wild fire relief efforts)           $212

• Star Honoring Quilts for Native Americans
graduates of the Sioux Falls Public School      $500

• Guest At Your Table box gifts
to the UU Service Committee                           $101

News from MidAmerica Region UUA February Newsletter:
Drumroll everyone, the new name of "Standing on the Side of Love" is, "SIDE WITH LOVE" https://sidewithlove.org/. HUZZAH! For nine years Side with Love has been our interfaith public advocacy campaign promoting respect for the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Side with Love confronts issues of exclusion, oppression, and violence based on identity. Many of us have worn their yellow shirts and carried their banners. And, for years folks have noted that the phrase "Standing on the Side of Love" excluded people with diverse means of mobility. At GA 2017 a Responsive Resolution was approved to "create a new imagining that better includes and reflects the needs and contributions of disabled people." Many stakeholders worked together to come up with "Side with Love." And what about all those old T-shirts and banners? Phase them out when you can.
