President's Message

Over the weekend of Oct. 28-29, UUA regional consultant Rev. Lyn Burton facilitated a two day planning session with the All Souls Board, team leaders and members.
As a foundation from which to build, Rev. Burton first had participants discuss the strengths and assets of our church. What struck me, as I looked over the list we created, were the impressive numbers of  positives our members identified in our church. Some of these include (but certainly are not limited to): having seven years of ministerial leadership in the past; having a strong pledge base; located in the heart of a growing urban community; benefiting from dedicated members and volunteers; having a paid office administrator; two paid child-care providers; a long history in this community and an inspiring heritage; and a commitment to grow.
Rev. Burton then had us identify priorities, present and future, and which committees or task forces would assume responsibility for these goals. Some of the priorities identified are (not all are included here):  professional ministry (and growing enough to hire a full-time minister); increased recognition in our community; increase our financial resources; continued focus on children, families, young adults and elders; identify how to practice being a Welcoming Congregation; and developing an adult RE program.
During the final step of our planning, Rev. Burton had everyone identify their top three priorities for our congregation. Professional ministry, along with growing enough to hire a full-time minister, emerged as the top goal. Participants were also concerned about engaging people in the Sioux Falls community and fostering "right relations" among children, families, young adults and elders in our congregation.
Currently, the board is following up on how to fill the ministerial position for now. Copies of Rev. Burton's notes are available to members and friends upon request. Please let a board member know if you would like a copy.

Janelle Lenser, All Souls President of the Board
