April 29 - “A Playful Spirit – a state of Grace”

Yesterday, Rev. Fritz Hudson ended his sermon with a quote from Pablo Neruda: “We pass through solitude and difficulty, isolation and silence, to find that enchanted place where we can dance our clumsy dance and sing our sorrowful song (before others). But in that dance, and in that song, the most ancient rites of conscience fulfill themselves in the awareness …

President's Message

All Souls Church Safety Meeting

Recently, Community Resource Officer Brady Lieuwen of the Sioux Falls Police Department presented practical suggestions to All Souls members on how to make our church safer and more secure, especially when people are present in the building. These are some of Lieuwen’s suggestions:

*Doors should be kept locked during church services. A greeter could position her/himself so they have a good view of the front door and could let latecomers in as needed. This person would still be able to hear the church service.

*Churches need to have a policy on guns and decide whether or not guns are allowed on church grounds. What would All Souls do if someone came to church armed? Would we ask them to keep the gun in their car, for example?

*Keep bushes trimmed away from the windows. This makes it more difficult for prowlers to hide. Evergreens can be trimmed up a bit so you can see under them.

*Install exterior LEDs. They are brighter and make it easier to identify prowlers.

*Develop a “Disaster Plan” (a procedure to follow in case of fire, tornado or other unforeseen disasters) and make sure it is posted and reviewed with the congregation.

*Keep doors locked, not just during church services but also during meeting times or during office administrator hours.

*Install a doorbell and speaker, with or without a video, to alert people in the church as well as identify the visitor.

Officer Lieuwen said other churches in the area are implementing safety plans, and that there will be other opportunities to attend safety training meetings. The next training will be Thursday, April 26th. More specific information on time and place will be forthcoming.

All Souls Board of Directors
