President's Message

All Souls Safe Congregations Team meets about four times per year or as the need arises. The president is a part of that team. As current president, I would like to remind and encourage members and friends to feel comfortable bringing situations and concerns to the attention of the team. We are there to ensure the safety and well-being of all members and friends.

In light of our commitment to church safety, Safe Congregations has set a date for a church safety session to be conducted by Community Resource Officer Brady Lieuwen of the Sioux Falls Police Department or a member of his resource team. The session will be held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 21. Members of Safe Congregations, the church board, and team leaders are particularly encouraged to attend, but any congregational member or friend is also welcome to take part.

In light of the numerous school shootings that continue around our country, as well as attacks on some churches and church property,  it is important that we are "well armed" with information and ideas on how we can improve the level of safety in our church, especially when people are present. Officer Lieuwen and co-worker Lieutenant David McIntire assured us that we are already taking some of the important steps toward security and safety, but there are additional steps that can be taken.

Keep this date in mind, and Safe Congregations hopes that many of you will be able to attend. Bring questions and concerns with you to the meeting.

 Janelle Lenser, President
All Souls Board of Directors

Bits 'n' Pieces

Let there be (energy efficient) light!

After many years, All Souls has replaced an old and inefficient light fixture with a new LED-compatible light fixture. Installed in one of the downstairs bathrooms, the new fixture makes the restroom much brighter, especially over the mirror and sink.
The Facilities Team has also purchased LED lamps to replace the florescent ones in larger fixtures. Future plans include purchasing LED bulbs for all smaller church fixtures.
Studies show that switching to LED lighting will greatly reduce electricity use and could reduce All Souls' electricity costs by as much as 40%.

CAMP UNISTAR - Summer 2018

Camp UniStar is a camp for Unitarian Universalist individuals and families and other like-minded people, nestled in the Chippewa National Forest on Star Island in northern Minnesota. The lake encourages water activities; the forest trails attract hikers; sunrises and sunsets invite meditation.

Each year we welcome campers of all ages for a week-long stay, with activities for children and youth, and a daily program for adults on topics such as spirituality, science, sailing, social justice, self-reflection, yoga, dance, music or crafts.

The rustic facilities include a Lodge, five cabins, and a tenting area with five platforms. Each cabin is equipped with a simple kitchen, family sleeping rooms, common areas, and a shared bathroom with a tub. Shower houses are also available. There is capacity for 70 campers per week. Wholesome, delicious meals are provided three times a day in the Dining Hall, which is also used for other gatherings such as a weekly dance and talent show.

The vision for Camp UniStar is as clear as the water of beautiful Cass Lake; fresh as the air you breath boating to this remote island; bright as the stars you see at night; and heartfelt as the memories you will, or already have, of this magical place.
